Employment Fraud Scams
Scammers might promise a job, earning lots of money or working from home. They will post fake jobs in online ads, on social media and even on job search websites. Their aim is to steal your money and your personal information.
Job scams have some things in common. They promise you a job but ask you to pay first. They often insist that you pay with gift cards, cryptocurrency, a payment app or a wire transfer service like MoneyGram.
They may also send you a check with instructions to negotiate the item and send a portion of the check to a third party. These checks are counterfeit and will bounce against your account and cause an overdrawn balance that you will need to repay.
How to Avoid a Job Scam
- Research the job first. Do research on the company, especially consumer reviews and any references to a scam. See if other people have had problems.
- Never pay to get a job. Honest employers will not ask you to pay to get the job. And they will not send you a check and tell you to send some of the money back.
- Talk to someone you trust. Consult with your local branch office. Credit union representatives can assist you in determining whether the offer is legitimate.
